Default 2.5i tuned over time...

Well, I brought my car down to EFI today to have it checked out. It turns out that my ECU isn't supported yet, but that doesn't have me down. The good news is the Chris has a ROM of my ECU that he's sending out so it will be supported (for all you '08+ guys and gals) and also, the car was dynoed while I was down there so we have a baseline for the tune.

You can see the new, famous Subaru up-and-down waggle in the torque curve, in the graph below. The final numbers are 134 whp, 131 ft/lbs of torque. Doing some quick math, that's just over 22% drivetrain loss. Not bad for an essentially stock and, as I said, the car knows how to get out of it's own way. I can't wait for my next appointment. I'll keep everybody updated

I'm a little surprised at those baseline #'s. I was thinking it would make more like 150hp to the wheels. But thats great Ben!!!! Can't wait to see what this tune does for your car!

We can map specific box codes, unfortunately, the only way to tell is to bring the car to me and I have to pull the ROM to see if it's supported.

I was hoping that also, but at the same time, that would only be a 12% drivetrain loss (150/170) and that's ultra-unrealistic for an AWD powertrain. 135 is a good number at the wheels. I'm satisfied

... for now ;)

Great! Just let me know when you think you'll do this so I can mentally prepare for another parts swap.

Guys, just because EFI can tune these engines now doesn't meant we're suddenly going to have rip-roaring, fire-breathing, AWD-burnout machines. Honestly, Chris pretty much admitted that he's unsure how much more power there is to extract from the engine on a tune alone. I'm sure there are ways to get 300hp, but honestly, the money it will cost to get the engine there, and the stress it would put on the transmission, would not be worth the risks. Not at all.

A nice, flat torque curve, as opposed to my torque squiggle would be a reasonable expectation. EFI, you have to remember, is venturing into virtually unknown territory. I know the times of tunes that Chris does, and he's not going to tune you and let you leave with something that is going to blow up later. My car is a test-bed for seeing what the EJ253, the SOHC EJ25 N/A engine, is capable of. Hopefully, by the time things will come through on the side of the software designers, I'll have a hybrid intake on my car, or at least a Perrin lightened pully.

You all have to come into this tune with ZERO expectations of what this engine can do. We have ZERO idea. I'm curious, but I'm not expecting anything but a solid tune that Chris's reputation has brought me to expect.
